Gravity system instead of mechanical irrigation

Before the beginning of the irrigation season, the Etchmiadzin canal will be ready for operation. The earthworks of the 120-meter tunnel section around the canal have already been completed. This area was completely collapsed and 50 percent of the 800 hectares of cultivated land in eight villages was mechanically irrigated. The restoration works of the canal are being carried out with the co-financing of the Eurasian Development Bank and the Government of the Republic of Armenia, through the Territorial Development Fund of Armenia, within the framework of the irrigation systems modernization project. The investment for the reconstruction of Etchmiadzin canal is 170 million drams. A D=1800 mm GRP pipe will be laid in the 120-meter tunnel section around the canal in order to implement self-flow irrigation.
Within the framework of the irrigation system modernization project, with the co-financing of the Eurasian Development Bank and the RA Government, through the Armenian Territorial Development Fund, the one-kilometer section around the upper canal of the Aknalchi pumping station is also being restored. Previously, the loss of irrigation water in that part of the canal exceeded 30 percent. With an investment of around 200 million drams, the canal will be restored with a G-type reinforced concrete construction. After restoration, the water loss will not exceed ten percent, as a result, the water supply of Arshaluys community lands will increase.
